Cardew's book 'Pioneer Pottery' for the 'how' and 'why'

Originally published in 1969 when the only other books on the subject were Leach's 'A Potters Book' and Rhodes's 'Clay and Glazes for the Potter', Edmund de Waal argues that it brought a welcome, fresh approach.
