The terracotta treasures of Bishnapur, West Bengal, India
Jane Perryman travels to Bishnapur in West Bengal, India to discover some overlooked masterpieces:
'Between the 16th and 19th centuries in the state of West Bengal, India, temples were built on the alluvial delta of the Ganges river, forming one of the most distinctive groups of sacred monuments in the country. Due to the lack of stone they were constructed from brick and covered with ornate terracotta tiles depicting scenes from the epic Hindu religious poems the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as everyday life.'
