Taking a break from the studio
Brigid Howarth puts the case for time away from the demands of studio, office and home life.
"A North American artists’ community is not a residency as understood in the UK. The latter normally encompasses spending time in a school or university, factory or hospital and engaging in a two-way relationship. An American community places no such demands on the participant. You are going there to develop your work, and if that means counting the stars in the sky, so be it."
