Edward King, Director of the Lakeland Arts Trust, discusses his work at Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House in Cumbria
An unusual and dynamic museum director, Edward King has been tasked since 1993 with reversing the fortunes of the Lakeland Arts Trust. King persuaded the owner of Blackwell, a stunning Arts and Crafts House retaining several original features not to turn it into a hotel but to restore the house for public opening. Now this jewel of the Lake District houses regular contemporary studio ceramics exhibitions as part of its programme to complement its architectural interior. This interview profiles King’s challenges and achievements.
