Julian Stair admires Rob Barnard’s east-west aesthetic
At first glance, Rob Barnard’s career reflects the classic immersion of a Western potter into Oriental practice; but he went not as a potter pilgrim in search of an idyllic pre-industrial society and has never subscribed to that narrow view of Japanese ceramics. His work blends the traditions of Japanese wood firing with generic forms from American colonial and English medieval pottery and industrial ceramic design.
