Nigel Wood is impressed by the genius of William Cookworthy, who perfected the science of hard paste porcelain making in Britain
William Cookworthy (b.1705) was one of the greatest figures in the history of British porcelain making. Nigel Wood traces his discoveries, from the time Cookworthy spent investigating Cornish porcelain stones and china clay deposits to make the first true hard paste porcelains in Britain, to mastering the art of reduction firing on glazed wares. Cookworthy later ran factories in Plymouth and Bristol.
