Investigations into inlaid patterned tiles
John Keith Wood decides to make his own encaustic tiles. He provides an in depth account of his experiments – overcoming the difficuties of formulating and combining different coloured clays to achieve a flat, vitrified surface. Trials overcome the chemical and physical shrinkages and methods are devised to assemble the tiles without distorting the thin layers of clay which are applied to the main tile back.
