Fifty years of change and diversity in the Craft Potters Association
Edited by Emmanuel Cooper
|
|

|
This fully illustrated book accompanies the touring exhibition ‘The Pot, the Vessel,
the Object’ and tells the story of the Craft Potters Association (CPA).
Since its inception fifty years ago, the CPA has fostered a spirit of community and co-operation,
in which potters and ceramists have sought to cultivate and encourage an art form they believe to be truly expressive.
It has looked for shared values balanced with an acceptance that ceramics, like any other art medium,
has many voices and can take many forms.
The exhibition ‘The Pot, the Vessel, the Object’ marks fifty years of showing,
promoting and nurturing studio ceramics and is a perfect opportunity to reflect on the past, present and future.
This book confirms the importance of the CPA, and offers a fascinating visual record of the organisation’s development through
the decades.

Janet Leach – A Potter’s Life By Emmanuel Cooper
|
|

|
Ceramic Review Publishing is delighted to announce publication of a monograph on the life and
work of the distinguished potter Janet Leach (1919-1997), issued to coincide
with the first retrospective of her work at Tate St Ives.
The work of Janet Leach – one of the key potters of the twentieth century – brings together
a diverse range of influences ranging from early American pottery, traditional
Japanese and Korean pots and studio ceramics. Born in the United States
she married Bernard Leach in 1956 and lived and worked in St Ives until her
death in 1997.
Emmanuel Cooper traces the development of her ideas from the early, more formal pots to the
later, freely thrown bottles, many of which bear the marks and scarring of the
wood fire. With some 200 images, the book confirms Janet Leach’s status as a
gifted and original potter.

An A-Z Guide to 300 Ceramic Artists
Edited by Emmanuel Cooper
|
|

|
The Ceramics Book is a key reference guide to 300 ceramic artists and potters
living and working in Britain today, many of whose showrooms and potteries are
open to the public. In this illustrated pocket-sized A-Z directory, each potter
is represented by a full-colour image of typical work, accompanied by an
artist’s statement, portrait of the artist and their signature potter’s mark.
All are Fellows and Members of the Craft Potters Association.
The 300 quality illustrations cover functional/domestic ware, sculptural and
decorative works and fine art ceramics. This is an excellent aid to buying
ceramics direct from makers. Contact details and artists’ portfolio websites
are included next to the images and in a handy directory, aided by maps showing
the locations of potteries and studios that are open to the public.
The Ceramics Book replaces Potters (12th edition), the directory of Members of
the Craft Potters Association, which has been published every few years since
1972.

The life and work of Lucie Rie 1902-1995.
Edited by Emmanuel Cooper.
Lucie Rie (1902-1995) has had a profound influence on the direction of modern
ceramics. This fully illustrated, eighty-page book edited by Emmanuel Cooper,
brings together new essays and revised texts - some of which appeared in early
issues of Ceramic Review magazine - from potters, collectors and friends who
admired and were influenced by her life and work.
Cyril Frankel gives a biographical account of her life and background; Edmund de
Waal sheds new light on the artistic context within which she trained and
worked in Austria, while Alison Britton considers the breadth of Rie's work and
the personal rewards that many continue to draw from her legacy. Students and
those who worked with Lucie Rie give personal accounts. Previously unpublished
making sequences and reproductions of studio notebooks, provide valuable
insights into her working practice.

specific notes from individuals.
