On 23rd November we will be welcoming renowned Potter, Lise Herud Braten, for an afternoon of conversation and demonstrations.
Using a combination of hand building, wheel throwing, and Japanese ceramic techniques, Lise creates decorative and sculptural forms with highly textured, expressive surfaces. Memories of growing up in a rugged landscape in Norway inform both shapes and mark-making, imbuing the pieces with a sense of place.
During this one-off event Lise will share memories of her childhood in Norway and the landscapes which still form her main source of inspiration to this day. Lise will share details of her background studying and working in top end Couture Fashion, and how her journey into ceramics started with evening classes and eventually became a full time career.
Lise will also share insights into her development, courses she undertook, pivotal moments that influenced her practice, and how she got to where she is today without a formal education in ceramics.
During this event, Lise will give two demonstrations. During her first demonstration Lise will show how to mix two different coloured clays by using the slam wedging technique. Lise will also throw a small moon-vase, a cylinder bottle form and an open vessel on the wheel.
During the second demonstration Lise will carve the moon-vase, adding the flat top and organic neck to the bottle form before carving.
As well as this, Lise will speak about setting up and running Grove Vale Ceramics, a membership based, curated ceramics gallery, and why the time was right to leave it behind and set up a new workspace to concentrate solely on her own practise.
