In Beneath the Fallen Petals – Uncovering the Seeds of Surrender, Australian ceramic artist Lauren Hotson explores the universal human experience of mortality and renewal through a series of intricately crafted burial jars and mixed-media sculptural works. Inspired by ancient funerary practices and humanity’s enduring relationship with nature’s cycles, Hotson’s burial vessels are textured with her signature “Narratives of the Earth” surface, evoking geological rhythms and tidal formations. These are accompanied by evocative assemblages of found natural materials, animal bones, driftwood, and weather-worn fragments embellished with handmade porcelain flowers. Some works are woodfired, their surfaces kissed by ash and flame, while others remain unglazed, revealing the raw beauty of black and white porcelain clay. The exhibition invites quiet contemplation on surrender, impermanence, and the unexpected beauty that can emerge from decay.
