Over the past 10 years whilst setting up the Studio Eleven Gallery & Workshop in Hull, Adele Howitt has been quietly developing her new form of ceramic art in response to the notions of living landscape, abstraction, pollen grains, and natural pattern mark - making.

Studio Eleven is now an established studio and gallery which has grown out of a creative practice. Since 2009, Adele has provided an important service to potters & ceramicists, offering the only workshop with equipment in East Yorkshire. We continue to enthuse the community to get involved through open workshops, membership, and free inspiring exhibitions that focus on British contemporary ceramics.

In September, Adele is set to launch a new collection of ceramics for the upcoming exhibition Botanical Blueprints at the Studio Eleven Gallery.

Post-industrial and semi-rural landscapes are the inspiration for her new show; opening in September as park of the Freedom Festival Hull. A particular inspiration is the recent emergence of new wildflower and grass habitats as nature reclaims what was lost during industrialisation. Slab work is twisted and turned to add detailed relief utilising the traditional pottery techniques discovered whilst investigating the South Yorkshire Potteries. The clay is a sculptural medium, and techniques include, drawing, hand building, coil / slab building, hand-thrown elements, extruded clay, and glazing.

Adele has invited the UK’s leading Cyanotype artist, Angela Chalmers, to share the exhibition.

Angela Chalmers is an artist based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Her creative practice reflects her passion for the Victorian era. Her photographic images are created using the medium of cyanotype, a nineteenth-century printing process, and camera-less photography techniques. The manipulation of light and shadow using double exposure techniques area united with the use of plant life and digital negatives to portray the forms and rhythms of nature that often converge in a beautiful yet chaotic manner.

Artwork has been exhibited across Europe including, the Steninge Slott Cultural Centre, Stockholm, Sweden, VI Biennal de Ceramica del Vendrell Barcelona Spain, Ceramica Multiplex at Kerameikon Croatia, The London Design Fair, Crafts Council British Crafts Pavilion, various RHS Gardens including Chelsea Flower Show, and the British Ceramics Biennial 2017. Seedpod White is accessioned at the International Taiwan Biennale 2016 at the Yingge Ceramics Museum near Teipei in Taiwan. ‘Hypericum Perforatum’ is selected for the NVK KERAMIEK TRIËNNALE 2021 at the CODA Museum, Apeldoorn, Netherlands, Collect London 2022.

Her ceramics can be found in Museum Collections in Teipei, Barnsley, Croatia and various arts in health spaces.
