Yuk Kan Yeung: ‘Unbound’

Over the years, Yuk Kan Yeung has realised numerous projects and exhibitions. Each time, she finds it a challenge to give shape to new ideas in porcelain or paper.

Her colourful porcelain series "Between Shades" is inspired by two 18th-century Chinese family-rose vases from the depot of the Central Museum Utrecht, a collaboration with the Utrechtse Aarde Foundation. Conversely, the subtle black and white stones are the result of research into the philosophy of the Chinese scholar's rock. Experimenting with materials, exploring the many aspects of space, shapes and colours, and delving into various subjects are her driving forces in the creative process.

Her work is an expression of the moment: what she feels, what she experiences, and what she wants to tell. Emotion is a unifying factor. Her porcelain objects are the narrators of the story unfolding within her at that moment. They can be fragile and paper-thin or robust and solid; left white or colourfully painted. The Chinese Yin-Yang philosophy is present and merges with Western culture. There is always a poetic approach and a search for the essence of things.

The orientation of her subjects is broad due to her curiosity, while her working process is unknown – the void. In this exhibition, she presents works from the past decade, as well as her most recent work. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore her journey in images.
